antarvasna Shacks to ensure tourists don’t take away booze PANAJI: Those found drinking on beaches, cooking in the open or littering public places now stand to be fined. A single offender will have to pay Rs 2,000, while a group will be fined Rs 10,000. This was decided by the state cabinet on Thursday, which gave its nod to amend the Goa Tourist Places (Protection and Maintenance) Act, 2001, to ensure that tourist places and beaches are kept clean and safe for tourists and others, tourism minister Manohar Azgaonkar said.Offenders, who refuse to pay the fine , will have to undergo imprisonment for three months , As Reported By TOI.

According to the Newspaper,The proposed amendment will be tabled in the three-day assembly session starting on Tuesday next week, Azgaonkar said.It has been observed that many tourists carry alcohol bottles with them to the beach, which they then discard in the sand. Sometimes, broken glass bottles are left behind in the sand, and there have been instances of visitors to the beach sustaining injuries because of the shards. Besides, there have also been several cases of tourists getting into the sea after consuming alcohol and drowning.Though the tourism department ensures that all beaches are regularly cleaned, littering by tourists and others affects the governments efforts at maintaining cleanliness of tourist spots.
