CHICAGO, Illinois --

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, knowing how to perform CPR can make all the difference.

Illinois Heart Rescue, a program run by the University of Illinois at Chicago, was created in 2013 to increase survival rates for out of hospital cardiac arrests.

"If you start CPR within less than two minutes of that event, their odds of surviving have gone up at least three to five fold and that's dramatic," said Dr. Terry Vanden Hoek, the head of emergency medicine at UI Health and founder of IHR.

John Gray knows that first-hand. His then-girlfriend, Beatrice Villar, took a CPR class a month before he suffered a heart attack four years ago.

"He was lying on his back. His face was all red and he was gasping for air," she said.

She put her training into action.

"I started chest compression because I knew it was important to do that to get the blood and oxygen to the brain to keep him going," Villar said.

Gray said Villar saved his life.

"It is a second chance at life. It means the world to me literally," he said.

According to IHR, over the last several years in Illinois the survival rate for out of the hospital cardiac arrest has gone up from 2 percent to 10 percent. It's now on par with the national average.

Dr. Vanden Hoek said there's more work to be done.

"I don't think your chances of surviving should depend on what neighborhood you live in," he said.

Teri Campbell, a flight nurse and the director of IHR, said many people are surprised how easy it is to learn how to perform CPR.

"Here's the good thing. When you are doing CPR, you cannot seriously hurt somebody," she said.

And those minutes can add years to someone's life.

"I thought about one lesson learned from this event and that is try to find somebody or people who know CPR and spend as much time as you can with them and in my case that meant marrying Beatrice," Gray said.

Gucci is charging more than $A1000 for a pair of ‘dirty’ shoes.

The luxury fashion brand described the trainers — dubbed the “Screener GG sneaker” — as “vintage” and “old “school”, with an “allover distressed effect” on gucci.com.

To call them “distressed” is putting it mildly.

The bizarre 70s-inspired trainers, which are made in Italy, cost $A1175 from Gucci’s cruise 2019 collection and are worn-in all over the sole and upper.

Selling the sneakers — complete with intentional scuff marks — for that price has raised eyebrows online, where shoppers just could not get over the cost.

It’s not the first time Gucci has courted controversy over a design. The brand was widely criticised last week for selling a knit that was accused of racial overtones.

The $890 black jumper with a high neckline featured a printed pair of red “lips” that some believed was reminiscent of blackface.

In a letter to staff, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele said he took “full accountability” for the unintended racist garment and said the furore caused him the “greatest grief”.

Michele wrote that it was not inspired by blackface but by the late Leigh Bowery, a performance artist, club promoter and fashion designer who often used flamboyant face makeup and costumes.

Regardless, Michelle said, he took “full accountability” for the sweater, which was pulled last week amid widespread criticism.

Gucci apologised, saying in a previous statement posted on Twitter that it was committed to diversity and considered it a “fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected and at the forefront of every decision we make.”

The balaclava-style sweater that covered the nose above the cutout was ridiculed on social media as insensitive and racist. It has since been pulled from sale.

Gucci also raised eyebrows last September when it sold a pair of bathers that it advised wearers not to actually get wet.

The fashion house confused online shoppers with a $470 one-piece that you can’t actually get wet.

Gucci’s so-called “sparkling swimsuit” was made of 80 per cent nylon and 20 per cent elastane.

The catch? The sold-out racer-back togs can’t “come into contact with chlorine”.

“Due to the nature of this particular fabric, this swimsuit should not come into contact with chlorine,” a statement on Gucci’s website says, in the pricey item’s product description.

There was a reason behind Jennifer Lopez’s recent diet challenge — she’s trimming down to play a stripper.

The actress, 49, went on the diet with boyfriend Alex Rodriguez. They cut out carbs and sugar for 10 days.

She said the idea of the extreme diet came from her trainer while prepping for a movie where she’ll have a tiny wardrobe.

“I’m getting ready for this movie called Hustlers and I have to play a stripper so I’m getting ready for that,” she said on The Ellen Show.

“I work out a lot, I try to stay healthy but (my trainer) was like ‘let’s do something to move the needle.’”

But when presented with the idea to eliminate bread and sweets the Shades of Blue actress wasn’t sure she was up to it.

“That’s most of my diet,” she admitted. “I was like ‘Completely? Like cold turkey?’”

However the couple successfully completed the challenge on January 31, but it didn’t come without its struggles.

“You feel like you’re in an alternate reality or universe, like you’re addicted and you think about it all the time,” she said of bread-themed daydreams, but admitted that by the time the 10 days were up her cravings weren’t too bad.

“When you go back to the sugar you don’t want it as much, it’s something you get used to a little bit,” she said. “It takes down the inflammation and you feel smaller and less swollen then you get addicted to that feeling too.”

When you’re getting hangry, sometimes you’ve just got to kill that pregnancy craving.

So when Emily Ryan returned home from the McDonald’s drive-through 40 weeks pregnant and salivating over the Big Mac she was about to tuck into, she wasn’t impressed.

What was supposed to be an order without pickles and onions ended up being a sad looking meat patty with no buns on some limp lettuce and melted cheese.

“When you’re 40 weeks pregnant and the baby needs a McDonald’s Big Mac without pickle or onions and you come home from the drive-through to find this,” the Sydney woman posted on Facebook.

Mrs Ryan said she always checked the bag to see all of her items were in there but she never thought to open the boxes too before leaving the drive-through.

When she got home she realised it was the drive-through operator’s fault but she wasn’t too hard on the fast food chain for the mistake.

“It was the lunch rush and I used to work at Macca’s during my uni days so I do sympathise with how busy they were,” she told news.com.au.

“But being nine months pregnant makes you hangry.”

The soon to be mother of two said she compromised by eating half of her husband’s chips.

“The manager promised me a free one next time I go in so all is not lost,” she said.

“And yes of course I still ate it - would have been a criminal waste of special sauce not to.”

bf video

Mrs Ryan’s friends were quick to react to her post on social media, saying the error was “cruel”.

“Maybe Emily they didn’t know you were pregnant and thought ‘that lady does NOT need the bun’,” joked one.

The Ryan family is still waiting for their own bun in the oven to arrive.

Big Macs often cops the brunt of complaints from Macca’s lovers, with most usually outraged that the size doesn’t fit the ‘big’ title.

Burger King recently came out swinging after its competitor lost its Big Mac trademark in the European Union.

Burger King leapt at the chance to troll the company, and in a viral ad created an entire menu mocking Maccas, and Big Macs specifically.

The “Not Big Mac’s” menu includes meal options such as “like a Big Mac but actually big”, the “burger Big Mac wished it was” and “kind of like a Big Mac, but juicier and tastier”.

Other available options are “the anything but a Big Mac” and “the Big Mac-ish but flame grilled of course”.

News.com.au has contacted McDonald’s for comment.

Man sends failed date $9 invoice

Want to get more information about jio tv? Read this article now: Man sends failed date $9 invoice

A man has been branded “petty” after charging a date $9 for a drink he bought her when things didn’t pan out.

Angela Doyle, from Norwich in the UK, was horrified when the man she’d been for a drink with asked her to transfer £4.95 ($A8.91) for the gin and tonic she’d had on their date.

Angela went on the date earlier this week but later decided she wasn’t “feeling it” — which she explained to her date over text message, The Sun reports.

But to her horror, the man she’d been out with asked her to reimburse the money for the gin and tonic he had bought during their meet-up.

Angela’s daughter, Sophie, found it hilarious and shared the messages on Twitter, commenting: “Mum went out on a date and wasn’t feeling it, the guy fully texted her and asked her to send him £4.95 for her g&t.”

jio tv

The screen grab shows the end of Angela’s message, which she finished in a friendly and amicable manner, writing: “Take care and it was nice meeting you. X.”

But it seems the date did not appreciate the rejection and replied, asking Angela to transfer £4.95 ($A8.91) to pay for her drink.

“Oh dear,” he wrote.

“It’s expensive being a man being rejected all the time.

“Please be kind enough to put £4.95 in my account to pay for your drink.”

And social media was equally stunned, with several Twitter users voicing their opinions online.

One wrote: “This is the kind of guy that adds everything up while dating and expects a refund if and when things end.”

While another said: “Think she’s had a lucky escape.”

“How petty,” another said.

jio tv

One even suggested Angela set up a standing order of “1p a month for 495 months”.

Some, however, took the opinion the date was “right”.

One wrote: “Unpopular opinion: The guy is right. If nothing came out of it, he’s entitled to his hard earned money. Would’ve said the same if the girl paid and asked for it back.”

The user quickly changed his opinion, however, after one woman pointed out: “This implies that the drink comes with ulterior motives.

“People are supposed go on dates cos they like the other person, and buy the other person a drink cos it’s a nice thing to do. It’s not a down payment on a 2nd date or sex or anything that can be refunded.”

Others thought the whole thing was hilarious, sharing funny memes in response.

Since sharing the exchange two days ago, the post has received more than 650 comments and been liked 38,000 times.

What are your thoughts on the unusual exchange? Do you think the man had a right to ask for the money back, or is the suggestion outrageous? Tell us what you think below.

Measles: WHO warns cases have jumped 50%

Want to get more information about bf video? Read this article now: Measles: WHO warns cases have jumped 50%

bf video

The World Health Organization has warned that efforts to halt the spread of measles are “backsliding”, with case numbers worldwide surging around 50% last year.

The UN health agency pointed to preliminary data showing that the disturbing trend of resurgent measles cases was happening at a global level, including in wealthy nations where vaccination coverage has historically been high.

“Our data are showing that there is a substantial increase in measles cases. We’re seeing this in all regions,” said Katherine O’Brien, WHO’s director of immunisation and vaccines.

“We’re having outbreaks that are protracted, that are sizeable and that are growing,” she said. “This is not an isolated problem.”

bf video

Measles outbreak in Philippines kills 70, with vaccine fearmongering blamed

O’Brien pointed out that fewer than 10% of actual measles cases are reported. “So when we see the reported cases increasing by 50%, we know that we’re heading in the wrong direction,” she said, adding that the true number of infections was “in the millions”.

Countries have until April to report measles cases registered in 2018 to the WHO.

But the agency said the data it has received so far showed that around 229,000 cases had already been reported, compared to 170,000 for 2017.

In 2018 measles caused approximately 136,000 deaths around the world, according to the WHO’s preliminary figures. The highly contagious disease can cause severe diarrhoea, pneumonia and vision loss. It can be fatal in some cases and remains “an important cause of death among young children” according to the WHO. The disease can be easily prevented with two doses of a “safe and efficient” vaccine that has been in use since the 1960s, the UN agency says.

Facebook under pressure to halt rise of anti-vaccination groups

Up until 2016 the number of measles cases had been steadily declining but since 2017 the number had soared, according to Katrina Kretsinger, who heads WHO’s expanded immunisation programme.

“There are a number of outbreaks … which are driving some of these increases,” she told reporters, pointing to significant outbreaks in Ukraine, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chad and Sierra Leone.

In Madagascar alone “from October 2018 through 12 February 2019 a total of 66,278 cases and 922 deaths have been reported”, the WHO said.

In poorer countries, marginalised communities and states in conflict, lacking access to the vaccine is the problem, the WHO says.

In Europe and other wealthy areas, meanwhile, experts blame the problem in part on complacency and misinformation about the vaccine.

The resurgence of the disease in some countries has been linked to medically baseless claims linking the measles vaccine to autism, which have been spread in part on social media by members of the so-called “anti-vax” movement.

“We’re backsliding on the progress that has been made,” O’Brien said.

“And we’re not backsliding because we don’t have the tools to prevent this. We do have the tools to prevent measles,” she said.

“We’re backsliding because of the failure to vaccinate.”

What causes finger numbness?

Want to get more information about birthday wishes? Read this article now: What causes finger numbness?

Table of contents

  1. Carpal tunnel syndrome
  2. Compression neuropathy
  3. Peripheral neuropathy
  4. Fibromyalgia
  5. Myofascial pain syndrome
  6. Medications
  7. Other causes
  8. Summary

Numbness in the fingers can have many different causes, from carpal tunnel syndrome to some types of neuropathy.

In some cases, treatment may simply require a change in the way that a person uses their hands. However, medication or surgery may be necessary for cases with more complex underlying causes.

This article looks at six causes of numbness in a person's fingers, as well as the treatment options.

1. Carpal tunnel syndrome

birthday wishes
Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common causes of numbness in a person's fingers.

According to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), one of the most common causes of numbness in a person's fingers is carpal tunnel syndrome.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway in the base of a person's hand. The median nerve passes through it, and the pinching of this nerve can cause numbness, itching, or pain in the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger. Carpal tunnel syndrome often causes the hand to go numb while a person is sleeping because of the position that they hold it in.

To diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome, a doctor will take a detailed medical history, asking about any other conditions that a person has, how they use the wrist, and if they have experienced any prior injuries.

A person may be able to treat this condition by changing the way in which they use their hands.

For example, a person may get carpal tunnel syndrome because of how they sit at a desk while using a computer. Changing the chair, mouse, or keyboard that they use may resolve the issue.

Alternatively, a doctor may suggest that they temporarily wear a splint to prevent or reduce swelling. Splints help prevent the hand from going numb, especially at night.

If the symptoms are more severe or do not resolve with other treatments, a person may need steroid injections to reduce inflammation. In other cases, surgery may be necessary to create more room for the nerve to pass through the carpal tunnel.

2. Compression neuropathy

Compression neuropathy is when pressure on a nerve causes a loss of feeling and weak or twitchy muscles in parts of a person's body. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a type of compression neuropathy.

According to the ASSH, a nerve may come under pressure due to an injury, enlarged blood vessels, the thickening of the muscles, or cysts that grow near a nerve.

A compressed nerve in the wrist, elbow, forearm, or neck can result in the loss of feeling in a person's fingers.

People can make lifestyle changes to treat mild compression neuropathy. For example, creating a more ergonomic work station can improve neuropathy that has developed due to movements at work.

Physical or occupational therapy may be useful to relieve tight muscles that are compressing nerves. These types of therapy can also teach a person how to avoid causing symptoms in the future.

Obesity can also cause compression neuropathy, so losing weight may reduce symptoms.

A person with severe compression neuropathy might require surgery.

birthday wishes

3. Peripheral neuropathy

birthday wishes
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead a person to develop peripheral neuropathy.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to a person's peripheral nervous system. This system helps transmit signals across a person's body.

Peripheral neuropathy can cause many different symptoms depending on the nerves that it affects. These symptoms may include the loss of feeling in the hands.

There are many causes of peripheral neuropathy. It can be either genetic, which means that a person inherits it from a biological parent, or acquired.

Causes of acquired peripheral neuropathy include:

There are many rarer underlying causes of peripheral neuropathy. A doctor may test for these once they have ruled out the common causes.

Treatment for peripheral neuropathy will depend on where the nerve damage occurs and the specific symptoms that the individual is experiencing.

4. Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes a person to have pain, numbness, and tingling in various parts of their body. Other common symptoms include:

  • sleep problems
  • fatigue
  • memory issues
  • difficulty concentrating or thinking

People who have fibromyalgia are more likely than other people to develop carpal tunnel syndrome.

5. Myofascial pain syndrome

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a musculoskeletal problem that can cause pain in the muscles or referred pain in other parts of the body.

The ASSH note that it can also cause numbness of the hands and forearms.

According to an article in the journal Pain and Therapy, there is limited evidence to support many of the current treatment options for MPS.

The authors suggest targeting the underlying cause of MPS until further research can lead to the development of specific, effective interventions.

6. Medications

birthday wishes
A lack of vitamin B-1, as found in macadamia nuts, can cause numbness in the fingers.

The ASSH note that some medications, such as cancer treatment drugs, can cause tingling and numbness in a person's hands. These side effects may be temporary or permanent.

According to the American Cancer Society, there is no sure way of preventing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

However, the medical team responsible for a person's treatment will keep a close eye on this side effect and vary the medication dosage to try to manage it as best as possible.

Other causes

Other, less common causes of numbness in the fingers include:

Summary

There are many different possible causes of numbness in the fingers. This symptom may resolve without treatment or with minor lifestyle changes, depending on the underlying cause.

If the numbness does not go away, a person should speak to a doctor to determine the cause and the most suitable treatment.

MARGAO/PANAJI: When residents of Vasco are not cleaning their houses, they are visiting doctors to get treated for respiratory diseases. In fact, the increase in the port town’s coal pollution levels has alarmed not only local medical practitioners but also public health regulators.

hindi shayari
Senior physician Dr Baban Parulekar says although there are no statistics, Vasco has been witnessing a definite rise in respiratory diseases. “It (coal dust) goes into the upper and lower respiratory tracts from the nose, right down to the lungs. It also may affect other parts of the body and cause allergies,” he says.

The paediatric group — infants, children and adolescents up to 12 years of age — is believed to be particularly vulnerable. “They are affected more than the elderly,” Parulekar adds.

Doctors aver that the ideal solution lies in constant monitoring of air quality with regard to suspended particulate matter.

Consultant chest physician at Old Goa’s Healthway Hospital, Dr Akashdeep Singh Arora, says long-term exposure to coal dust could induce chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and that workers exposed to it over a long period even risk catching pneumoconiosis — a disease caused by dust accumulation in the lung sacs.

“Both these illnesses, once well-established in the body, have a negative impact on a patient’s quality of life. There is loss of work days and reduced work capacity, as well as increased chances of lung infections. While both illnesses can be controlled well with medications, the conditions cannot be fully reversed,” Arora said.

Margao-based chest specialist Dr Hemant Kulkarni, is of the view that coal workers and others involved in handling the substance run the risk of contracting serious pulmonary ailments, symptoms of which may begin to show only after 2-3 years. He, however, says that much depends on the size and quantum of the suspended particulate matter of the pollutant.

Kulkarni advocates an ideal solution that entails constant monitoring of air quality to determine the size and quantum of the suspended particles. “One should insist on air sample surveys. While finer particles go deep inside the lungs causing pulmonary ailments, bigger particles will cause no harm. If the parameters are found to be beyond permissible limits, something needs to be done.” he explains.

Spillage of lumps during coal transportation, Kulkarni says, poses no major health hazard as the particles don’t remain suspended in air.

Diagnosis of coal dust-related lung problems can be made by simple tests like a pulmonary function test (PFT) and chest X-rays, the doctors say, adding that some cases may require a CT scan of the chest.

“The first step of treatment is to stop continuous coal dust exposure,” says Aurora. “Prevention of such exposure requires efforts from the area of coal storage to stop the dust from disseminating in the air to individual households in maintaining dust screens on windows.”

Kulkarni cautions against smoking as a preventive measure at an individual level, while advising workers handling coal to use face masks.

aaj takINDIAN FASHION WAS ALWAYS SUSTAINABLE

It’s only now that the world has started talking about sustainability, but if you look at the clothes of our ancesters, even 40-50 years back, everything was handwoven, organic, and thereby sustainable. It is our responsibility to reduce our carbon foot print and for that, handloom is the only way forward. No western nation has as rich a textile heritage as India. Why look elsewhere?

WEAR A SAREE, SAVE A WEAVER IS MY MANTRA

I’ve been emphasising on handloom clothing since the beginning of my career. Hand-spun textile is not only timeless but also gives life to our weavers. When I started doing fashion shows around the world, my aim was to get international designers to order fabrics from our weavers and it has worked. These days I focus on weaves like Gollabhama, Narayanpet, Mangalgiri and Venkatgiri. But of late, I have realised that I don’t want my weaver to weave just one saree or my client to invest in just one saree. So I use 10 sarees to make one lehenga! It’s win for the weaver and the outfit is unique.

SOUTH INDIAN WEAVES ARE TRENDING, AND HOW

South Indian fashion has developed by leaps and bounds and that makes me elated. I started with Kalamkari and now it’s everywhere. There was a dearth of Ikat, Pochampalli and Putupaka even eight years ago. But we took double Ikat and triple Ikat and lot of Telia Rumal and presented it at international shows and there was a boom like never before. Now, Pochampalli is all over. Our styles are timeless; We only need to take time out to bring it to limelight.

HOW SHADNAGAR’S BREEZY LINEN-KHADI WENT TO HOT ‘N’ HIP DUBAI

At the Dubai Fashion League, the collection I showcased was lapped up. It was all handloom fabrics, but the riot of colours, from mustard, orange and red to deep blue and pomegranate pink left everyone stunned. Our showstopper Sunny Leone sported a striking white ensemble made of linen-khadi blend textile from Shadnagar, Telangana. The breathability of the fabrics goes so well with the weather of Dubai. They loved it!
